SUMMARY:As cover Conductor: San Diego Symphony. "Singing with the Devil: Rafael Payare and Cantata Criolla"
DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS AND REPERTOIRE \n\n\nRafael Payare\, conductor\nAquiles Machado\, tenor\nGustavo Castillo\, baritone\nSan Diego Master Chorale \nGabriel Fauré: Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande\, Op. 80\nPaul Dukas: La Péri\, Poème Dansé (Dance Poem in One Scene)\nEvencio Castellanos: Santa Cruz de Pacairigua\nAntonio Estévez: Cantata criolla\, “Florentino\, el que canto con el Diablo” (Florentino\, the One who Sang with the Devil) \n\n\nABOUT \n\n\nMusic Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies\, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols. Plus\, French composer Paul Dukas’ La Péri\, a dance poem based on a Persian folk story\, is filled with grandiosity\, mystery and introspection—and an ebullient fanfare closing. \nNote: gates for the Friday and Saturday performances will open at 6pm. \n\nPerformance dates: \nFriday\, May\, 2023\, 7:30 pm \nSaturday\, May 27\, 2023\, 7:30 pm

And who better than the amazing pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet to be at the keyboard? Then Rafael Payare will be on the podium for Mahler’s Symphony No. 4\, which abounds in gorgeously colorful melodies that range from child-like innocence to deep explorations of the human soul. SUMMARY:As assistant conductor: OPERA Nixon in China - Opéra Bastille - John Adams
DESCRIPTION:Opéra Bastille – from 22 March to 16 April 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n3h00 with 1 interval\n\n\nLanguage : English \nSurtitle : French / English \n\n\n\n\n\nPre‑opening for the young : 22 March 2023\nOpening night : 25 March 2023\n\n\n\nIN FEW WORDS: \n\nIn February 1972\, the American president Richard Nixon went to China to meet Mao Zedong. In the context of the war in Vietnam and the cold war\, this encounter marked a turning point in Chinese‑ American relations. John Adams\, a major musical figure of the last forty years\, made this event of contemporary history the subject of his first opera. Nixon in China tackles the political thaw instigated by ping-pong diplomacy\, begun by the invitation of the American table tennis players by their Chinese counterparts\, one year before the presidential visit. A mesmerising work in which the pulsations and repetitions typical of minimalism are combined with melodic lines of great lyricism. For its entry into the Paris Opera repertoire\, this work has been entrusted to the director Valentina Carrasco\, who underlines the importance and the mediating power of Chinese national sport in history.

SUMMARY:Dudamel Fellow Activities: Ortiz\, Villa-Lobos\, and The Firebird with Dudamel
DESCRIPTION:About this Performance\nDudamel introduces us to Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Uirapuru—subtitled “O passarinho encantado” (The Enchanted Little Bird)—a ballet score inspired by the innumerable melodies produced by a legendary bird from the composer’s homeland\, Brazil. The concert ends with Stravinsky’s huge first hit—titled for another kind of enchanted bird—The Firebird\, based on folktales and folk tunes from Russia. Prize-winning Spanish violinist María Dueñas gives the first performances of outstanding Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’ new concerto. \nThis performance is generously supported in part by the Kohl Virtuoso Violin Fund. \nProgram\n\nVILLA-LOBOSUirapuru\nGabriela ORTIZAltar de cuerda (world premiere\, LA Phil commission with generous support from the Lenore S. and Bernard A. SUMMARY:Dudamel Fellow Activities: Dudamel Conducts Revueltas and Petrushka
DESCRIPTION:About this Performance\nDudamel leads two of his dramatic specialties: Silvestre Revueltas’ eerie film score that features a wild\, extended section in which countless percussion instruments suggest Mayan rituals. Then it’s Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly colorful score for a ballet based on a weird tale of a magician and his three puppets. SUMMARY:Dudamel Fellow Activities: Dudamel Conducts The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:About this Performance\nAlthough many of the stories about the explosion that began 20th-century music may be apocryphal\, The Rite of Spring most assuredly debuted under stressful circumstances. The music\, the choreography\, the audience\, the dancers\, the subject matter—controversies abounded. But the young Stravinsky had nailed what was going to take unprecedented priority in music: rhythm. The suite from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet Estancia has become an international hit\, but the complete work is rarely performed. Its story\, spanning a single day\, tells of a city boy who falls for a rancher’s daughter\, set against the landscape of Argentina’s disappearing gaucho culture. Opening the evening is a world premiere by Argentine composer Alex Nante\, commissioned as part of the Pan-American Music Initiative. \n  \n \nProgram\n\nAlex NANTE El Rió de Luz (world premiere\, LA Phil commission)\nGINASTERA Estancia\n\n  \n\nIntermission\n\n  \n\nSTRAVINSKYThe Rite of Spring\n\nArtists\n\nLos Angeles Philharmonic\nGustavo Dudamel\, conductor\nGustavo Castillo\, baritone/narrator\n\n  \nEnluis Montes Olivar\, cover conductor.
