DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS AND REPERTOIRE \n\n\nRafael Payare\, conductor\nAquiles Machado\, tenor\nGustavo Castillo\, baritone\nSan Diego Master Chorale \nGabriel Fauré: Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande\, Op. 80\nPaul Dukas: La Péri\, Poème Dansé (Dance Poem in One Scene)\nEvencio Castellanos: Santa Cruz de Pacairigua\nAntonio Estévez: Cantata criolla\, “Florentino\, el que canto con el Diablo” (Florentino\, the One who Sang with the Devil) \n\n\nABOUT \n\n\nMusic Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. Antonio Estévez’s best-known music is the 1954 Cantata Criolla\, a lively work based on the Venezuelan mythic poem about a singing contest between Florentino and the Devil. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies\, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols. Plus\, French composer Paul Dukas’ La Péri\, a dance poem based on a Persian folk story\, is filled with grandiosity\, mystery and introspection—and an ebullient fanfare closing. \nNote: gates for the Friday and Saturday performances will open at 6pm. \n\nPerformance dates: \nFriday\, May\, 2023\, 7:30 pm \nSaturday\, May 27\, 2023\, 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:As assistant conductor: OPERA Nixon in China - Opéra Bastille - John Adams
DESCRIPTION:Opéra Bastille – from 22 March to 16 April 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n3h00 with 1 interval\n\n\nLanguage : English \nSurtitle : French / English \n\n\n\n\n\nPre‑opening for the young : 22 March 2023\nOpening night : 25 March 2023\n\n\n\nIN FEW WORDS: \n\nIn February 1972\, the American president Richard Nixon went to China to meet Mao Zedong. In the context of the war in Vietnam and the cold war\, this encounter marked a turning point in Chinese‑ American relations. John Adams\, a major musical figure of the last forty years\, made this event of contemporary history the subject of his first opera. Nixon in China tackles the political thaw instigated by ping-pong diplomacy\, begun by the invitation of the American table tennis players by their Chinese counterparts\, one year before the presidential visit. A mesmerising work in which the pulsations and repetitions typical of minimalism are combined with melodic lines of great lyricism. For its entry into the Paris Opera repertoire\, this work has been entrusted to the director Valentina Carrasco\, who underlines the importance and the mediating power of Chinese national sport in history.
