SUMMARY:As cover conductor\, LA Phil: Gustavo Dudamel: Celebrating 17 years | LA Phil
DESCRIPTION:Gustavo Dudamel honors his Venezuelan and American identities\, presiding over two poetry-inspired choral symphonic works in his final Walt Disney Concert Hall program as Music & Artistic Director. At times hushed and mysterious and at others pulsating and ecstatic\, Harmonium was a breakthrough for John Adams’ compositional voice. Borrowing texts from Emily Dickinson and John Donne\, Adams explores time\, harmony\, and rhythm\, unraveling gentle meditations into an awe-inspiring swirl of sound. \nIn the second half\, Dudamel guides Cantata Criolla\, another breakthrough work that is not just definitive of composer Antonio Estévez’ voice but an emerging national Venezuelan style. The cantata follows Florentino\, a troubadour on the Venezuelan plains who challenges the devil to a battle of wit and song. Estévez’s cross-cutting rhythms and musical textures follow the contest from ominous peril to triumph. Driven by his belief that music can build bridges between cultures\, Dudamel selected the cantata as one of the first pieces he wanted to bring to Los Angeles in his inaugural season as Music Director\, and it fittingly sets the stage for Gustavo’s finale concert of the 2025/26 season. \nA note from Gustavo Dudamel\nThe great American composer John Adams was named an LA Phil Creative Chair in 2009\, the same year that I became Music Director\, and we’ve shared a rich and rewarding relationship in the 17 seasons since. It has been a privilege and an honor to premiere many of his incredible works\, but this program presents one of his earlier masterpieces. John has said that a successful performance of Harmonium should feel like traveling at different speeds\, but “nonetheless always moving forward over vast stretches of imaginary terrain.” The same might be said of the past 17 years. \nWe end the program with Antonio Estévez’s Cantata Criolla. This magnificent oratorio was one of the first works I brought to Los Angeles. A beloved staple of Venezuelan concert halls\, it depicts a duel in song between the llanero Florentino and the Devil. I grew up with this music\, and it is a joy to perform it once again in this hall with these amazing musicians. —Gustavo Dudamel \nThis performance is generously supported by The Hernandez-Stark Family and the Frank Gehry Fund for Creativity \n  \nProgram\n\n\n\n\nJohn ADAMS\n\n\n\n\nHarmonium\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntermission\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESTÉVEZ\n\n\n\n\nCantata Criolla\n\n\nArtists\n\nLos Angeles Philharmonic\nGustavo Dudamel\, conductor\nAlberto Arvelo\, director\nAnthony León\, tenor\nGustavo Castillo\, baritone\nMembers of YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles)\nJade Alfaro\nPablo Fernández\nAlondra Herrera Lopez\nCamila Higueros\nCatalina Mihok\nGreyson Session\nLos Angeles Master Chorale\nGrant Gershon\, Artistic Director\nJenny Wong\, Associate Artistic Director

Duxler\n\nAbout this Performance\nFor 17 years\, the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic have been close collaborators with Gustavo Dudamel in countless performances. To celebrate Gustavo’s tenure as Music & Artistic Director\, principal musicians of the LA Phil take center stage for an evening of symphonic favorites. \nRossini’s rousing William Tell Overture sets the evening in motion at full steam ahead\, a nod to the adventurous\, artistic heights the orchestra has scaled with Dudamel. Then comes a range of “classic” showpieces for bassoon\, oboe\, horn\, flute\, violin\, piano\, cello\, and harp. \nAfter intermission\, all eyes and ears are on percussion\, clarinet\, trombone\, bass\, and trumpet during a showcase of contemporary music. The program’s final works are world-premiere pieces by two dear friends of the LA Phil\, John Williams and Gabriela Ortiz. Williams’ Bravo Gustavo! takes its name from the commemoration of Dudamel’s first 10 years with the LA Phil\, highlighting the valiant energy of the trumpet section\, while Ortiz’s Mujer Arena celebrates the entire ensemble. \nConcerts in the Thursday 2 subscription series are generously supported by The Otis Booth Foundation. \nThis performance is generously supported by The Hernandez-Stark Family. \nThe appearance of Gustavo Dudamel is generously supported by the Walt and Lilly Disney Foundation. \nThe appearance of Christopher Hanulik\, Principal Bass\, Diane Disney Miller and Ron Miller Chair\, is generously supported by Jenny Miller Goff. \nThe appearance of Emmanuel Ceysson\, Principal Harp\, Ann Ronus Chair\, is generously supported by Lori Greene Gordon.

SUMMARY:As a cover conductor: New York Philharmonic\, Spring Gala with Dudamel & Kissin
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming the arrival of spring with a festive concert conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and featuring acclaimed pianist Evgeny Kissin in his first NY Phil appearance in ten years. \nThe celebration begins with Shostakovich’s exuberant Jazz Suite. Kissin is soloist in Scriabin’s Piano Concerto\, a lushly lyrical and highly romantic work. Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite rounds out the program with vivid orchestral color and rhythmic vitality. \nFor more information or to support the Spring Gala\, please contact the Office of Special Events at specialevents@nyphil.org.

SUMMARY:Debut in China: ETERNITY AND FANTASIES: ENLUIS MONTES OLIVAR & SZS CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:ETERNITY AND FANTASIES: \nENLUIS MONTES OLIVAR & SZS CONCERT \n  \nConductor    Enluis Montes Olivar \n  \nGINASTERA \nVariaciones Concertantes\, Op. 23 \nMÁRQUEZ  \nDanzón No. 8 \nROMERO \nFuga Con Pajarillo \nMOZART   \nSymphony No. 36 in C Major “Linz”\, K. 425 \n  \nNOTICE TO AUDIENCE \n1. DURATION Approximately 83 minutes with a 15-min intermission. \n2. SUGGESTED AGE 8 and above. \n3. Minimum height for children :1.3m. \n  \n  \nAs the strings lifts the curtain of night\, four musical canvases that crosses time and space will gradually emerge on the stage. The first thing that strikes your senses is Argentina’s plateau wind—Ginastera’s Variaciones Concertantes transforms pastoral traditions through contemporary workmanship\, just like spinning silver threads. While the harp shimmers like starlight over the Pampas steppe\, the cello whispers like a lone poet. Then\, a wave of heat sweeps in. Márquez’s Danzón No. 8 turns the sunshine of the Mexican Gulf into melodies. The indigenous rhythms of Cuba and Mexico strikes a balance between attractive swing and a steady pulse. You are invited to an endless summer celebration with leaping brass and lyrical strings that resemble Caribbean waves hugging the shore. Suddenly\, Baroque chambers are filled with the flutter of Venezuelan jungle spirits. Romero’s Fuga Con Pajarillo showcases this genius’s talent—where traditional counterpoint meets the tropical songbirds\, transforming brilliance into magic. Pajarillo rhythms and melodies give it a traditional spontaneity\, while fugal themes and countersubjects showcase contrapuntal skills. Music comes alive when South American’s wild spirits and European’s precision collide. Finally\, Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 in C Major\, “Linz”\, will bring us to the elegant hallways of the 18th century. This piece is one of Mozart’s representative works written during the middle of his career. C Major’s brilliance pierces through time’s curtain; strings flow like silk under the moonlight. The slow movement holds garden whispers\, while the finale whirls through bright ballrooms.

Brahms’s First Piano Concerto\, a work of symphonic vastness and one of its composer’s greatest masterpieces\, was written out of his burning grief at the early death of his mentor Robert Schumann and his desire to write a piece that would preserve the older composer’s memory for ever.
